The Department of Health established Climate Health Victoria in 2024.
The role of Climate Health Victoria is to promote climate change and sustainability action in Victoria’s public health system and support emissions reduction.
Climate Health Victoria provides a range of resources to assist public health organisations with their climate change adaptation, mitigation, and sustainability performance.
Climate change mitigation
The Department of Health is working with the Victorian Health Building Authority, health services and funded agencies to implement a range of emission reduction initiatives. These include
- The Victorian Health and Building Authority’s Energy Efficiency and Solar Program
- The Whole of Victorian Government Emissions Reduction Pledge
- The National Health and Climate Strategy to reduce the greenhouse gas impacts associated with medical gases.
Health and Human Services Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan 2022-26
This Plan outlines ways that the Victorian Government can support our community to stay healthy and well in a changing climate by improving access to climate and health-related information.
Renewable electricity in the health sector
From 1 July 2025, the Department of Health offices and large-scale facilities are powered with 100% renewable electricity. This includes hospitals and larger non-acute health facilities and cemeteries.
