FoodSmart

Key messages

  • FoodSmart is a Department of Health-approved food safety program template for class 2 retail and food service businesses.
  • Using FoodSmart can help you comply with food safety laws and requirements.
  • FoodSmart is not suitable for all food premises; if you are unsure, contact your local council authorised officer (also known as an environmental health officer) for advice.

What is FoodSmart?

FoodSmart is a standard food safety program (FSP), registered by the Department of Health. FoodSmart covers common, high-risk and potentially hazardous food processes and complies with the requirements outlined in the Food Act 1984 (VIC) (the Act) and the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code). An FSP sets out what you need to do to keep food safe in your business, including what can go wrong and what you should do if it does.

FoodSmart is free for use by class 2 retail and food service businesses.

Who can use FoodSmart?

FoodSmart can be used by class 2 retail and food service businesses in Victoria that are required to have a food safety program under the Act.

Check with your relevant registration authority (local council) to find out if your food business is required to have a food safety program and if the FoodSmart standard FSP is suitable for your food activities.

Note: FoodSmart is not designed for use by food manufacturers, meat, seafood or dairy food businesses, such as butchers or fishmongers, as these business types have different requirements that are not covered by the FoodSmart standard FSP.

The FoodSmart standard FSP cannot be used if your business uses food processes that are not covered in its contents.

Examples of food processes not covered include:

  • processes to extend the shelf life, such as vacuum packing
  • display of potentially hazardous foods out of temperature control for more than 4 hours.

Please check with your local council to find out more about the suitability of the FoodSmart FSP for your food business activities.
