Victoria has a number of approved intensive care units (ICUs) in public hospitals for adults and children (excluding neonatal intensive care units).
The role of the ICU varies depending on its size and the number, type and severity of illness of the patients admitted. It also depends on staffing expertise, facilities and support services. Critically ill children have specific needs and are usually treated in a paediatric intensive care unit.
Paediatric intensive care units
Tertiary referral paediatric intensive care units are capable of providing comprehensive critical care including complex multi-system life support for an indefinite period to children less than 16 years.
