Requirements of municipal public health and wellbeing planning

Advice for public health and wellbeing planning in Victoria helps councils with health and wellbeing planning and implementation for the 2025-29 cycle.

Legislative requirements of municipal public health and wellbeing plans

Councils are required to prepare a municipal public health and wellbeing plan every 4 years by the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008 (the Act), which also sets out what must be included in the municipal public health and wellbeing plan. In addition, there are other legislative obligations that councils need to be aware of when developing their municipal public health and wellbeing plans.

Advice Note 1 summarises the legislative requirements of municipal public health and wellbeing plans, outlines policy priorities for the health and wellbeing of all Victorians and provides links to relevant data and resources.

Advice Note 2 outlines the process and timelines of seeking an exemption from producing a standalone municipal public health and wellbeing plan.

Annual review of municipal public health and wellbeing plan - guidance note outlines the legislative requirements for annual reviews of the municipal public health and wellbeing plan, raises the implications of the Local Government Act 2020 for the process of the review, and provides an overview of the changing public health architecture, policies and opportunities that will inform the annual review.
