Cancer service capability framework

Service capability frameworks for cancer define the minimum standards and requirements for health services to achieve safe and effective cancer care.

Victoria's cancer reform agenda began with A cancer services framework for Victoria (2003) which set out the following principles:

  • multidisciplinary cancer care to ensure effective and efficient patient management
  • equity of access for patients and their carers and families regardless of where they live
  • high-quality and safe cancer services.

The Victorian Cancer Plan 2020 -2024 identified the importance of integration and coordination of care across service settings and locations. Clarity on the role of various parts of the health system to care for patients will deliver safer care. This includes strong referral pathways and coordination. Service capability frameworks for cancer will outline minimum standards and requirements for workforce, equipment and infrastructure and clinical support services.
