Workplace vaccination provider checklist – influenza

Assess providers against this checklist to ensure the best program for your staff:

• The provider can give evidence of appropriate accreditation for vaccinating nurses.
• Vaccines will be stored in their original packaging and monitored at a temperature between +2 °C and +8 °C in a portable vaccine cooler during transport and at the immunisation site.
• Appropriate information about the risks and benefits of vaccination, and the risks of influenza infection will be provided to the person being vaccinated before vaccination occurs.
• A pre-vaccination assessment (usually a short checklist) will be conducted to determine whether there are any contraindications or precautions for the vaccine.
• Valid consent will be gained from the person to be vaccinated after they have received appropriate information and the pre-vaccination assessment.
• All vaccinated people will be asked to remain under observation in a designated nearby place for a minimum of 15 minutes after the vaccination, in case of an immediate vaccine reaction.
• The workplace vaccine provider is equipped to manage an immediate allergic reaction to the vaccine (which is a very rare event).
• On completion of vaccination, all hazardous waste will be removed by the workplace vaccine provider.
• Advice will be given to the person being vaccinated about the management of the common side effects that may occur after vaccination.
• Details of the vaccination will be recorded on a card that can be kept as a record of vaccination. Information on how to find personal immunisation histories can also be found on the Service Australia website.
• An agreed process to report all influenza vaccinations to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR)
