SafeScript for prescribers and pharmacists

Key messages

  • SafeScript is a clinical tool that provides access to a patient’s prescription history for high risk medicines to enable safer clinical decisions.
  • SafeScript is quick and easy-to-use and can be integrated with prescribing and dispensing software.
  • As of April 2020 it is mandatory to check SafeScript prior to writing or dispensing a prescription for a medicines monitored through the system.
  • SafeScript assists clinicians with identifying high-risk circumstances but does not prevent clinicians from prescribing or dispensing a medicine they believe is clinically necessary.
  • Abruptly stopping treatment in patients who have been taking high-risk medicines over a long period is contrary to patient safety.

SafeScript allows doctors, nurse practitioners and pharmacists to access information about their patient’s prescription history for certain high-risk medicines. This information helps clinicians make safer clinical decisions and reduces the incidence of harm, including death, from the use of pharmaceuticals.

Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care Resources for Clinicians

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care has developed a suite of resources for clinicians on Real-time prescription monitoring (RTPM) in consultation with all state and territory health departments. These resources aim to highlight key messages and support the effective use of RTPM in clinical practice nationally.

A SafeScript customised version of the poster has been designed to improve consumer awareness and promote open dialogue about SafeScript. The poster is intended to be displayed in patient waiting areas of medical practices and pharmacies.
